>Ideas for research work in Beijing:
>
>The following proposal contemplates carrying out one research
>project during the World Conference, (to be completed and written
>up in following weeks) and gathering information that will serve
>for several other future research projects. The research team will
>meet with an advisory group in Beijing to complete planning, but
>please post any comments or suggestions here.
>
>Luchie: you will need to work on the methodology, which I haven't
>gone into in any detail.
>
>1) RESEARCH PROJECT:
>
>Undertake a research project on the information flow on computer
>networks to and from Beijing, in relation to how it is used to
>support organizational efforts, reach media and promote the issues
>of WCW. (ie. look at not only WHAT information flows, but how it
>is being used in relation to on-going social processes, media
>distribution, etc.).
>
>Process:
>
> - Make a short questionnaire for e-mail users at the business
> centre: how they are using computer communications in Beijing,
> etc. (preferable to complete it on a personal one-to-one
> basis).
>
> - Make an on-line questionnaire for circulation after Beijing
> to users of the conferences, mailing-lists, gophers, etc.
> about the on-line information service during Beijing: has the
> information and format satisfied their needs, how they have
> used the information...
>
> - Contact the teams that are doing information liaison work
> between Beijing and their home country. Gather information on
> how this is working. Also establish e-mail contact with some
> of the people receiving the mailing lists in the South (the
> London team will help with this).
>
> - Compile statistical information on the information flow (the
> London team could also help with this)
>
>
>2) INFORMATION GATHERING:
>
>a) Gather information for research projects on how women use
>electronic networks in general.
>
>Process:
>
> - use the same questionnare to users to include questions on
> how they use computer networks in general, obstacles, etc.
>
> - conduct interviews with APC team members and collaborators
> on the networking projects in their country and any other
> people with interesting experiences.
>
> - gather any written material on this
>
>b) Gather information for a research project on gender sensitive
>training methods and materials (take into account geographic and
>cultural differences:
>
>Process:
>
> - include a couple of questions in user questionnaire
>
> - include questions in interviews with APC team and
> collaborators
>
> - attend training sessions and gather information, comments
>
>c) Gather information for a research project on organizational
>models for promoting networking: how women are coordinating and/or
>working individually to promote women's electronic networking at a
>country and/or regional level; what problems do they face, what
>successes they have had, etc.
>
>Process:
>
> - Conduct interviews with people working in this area.
>
> - Organize a work-shop with these people to discuss the
> issues; record the discussions and take notes.
>
> - Gather any written material on the subject.
>
>d) Make contacts and gather information in general on any relevant
>topic.
>
>Process:
>
> - Collect bibliographies and compile bibliographic material.
>
> - Compile lists of people working in research in this field
> (conduct interviews if possible).
>
> - Attend events related to women, communications and
> information technology. Tape record key presentations related
> to this subject (if not available in written form).
