PRESS RELEASE
Association For Progressive Communications (APC)
Women's Networking Support Program

Press Release # 1
August 28, 1995

APC'S ALL-WOMEN TEAM ESTABLISHES INTERNET LINK
BETWEEN HUAIROU AND THE REST OF THE WORLD

40 women from around the world have arrived in China to set up and maintain
two APC (Association for Progressive Communications) networks for the
participants of the NGO Forum in Huairou and the WCW in Beijing.

The APC networks in China will provide full Internet services to all
participants and the press corps via two 64 Kilobyte lines. Women and men
around the world can access information coming directly from the NGO Forum
and the WCW via email, electronic conferences and 'world wide web' pages.
APC expects that more than 30 million people world-wide will have access to
information coming directly from China for the duration of the WCW.

APC has donated US$ 300.000 of staff, software, on-site and remote
technical support, and dissemination of NGO Forum proceedings and
information on the APC networks - which reaches 133 countries - as well as
the Internet.

An all-women technicial team from APC's Women's Networking Support Program
has started working in Building 17 - the Business Centre on the NGO Forum
compound - where it has configured two host computers which will handle
'gopher', 'world wide web', electronic mail, news and conferences. During
the NGO Forum, these host computers will act as a full APC network;
connecting the world-wide progressive community, including women who have
no Internet connection but dial-up access in regions such as Africa and
Asia.

The APC team will provide user support and training during the NGO Forum
and WCW. The women have brought their unique experiences in women's
networking from 25 different countries such as Sri Lanka, Ukraine, Senegal,
Uruguay, Japan and Canada. They will be able to support the women
participants in 18 languages. Beside the official conference languages they
can offer such languages as Wolof, Sinhala, Hindi, Russian, Portuguese and
Czech.

APC's staff is working from the experience gained during previous World
Conferences and NGO Forums. APC networks have provided services during all
UN World Conferences and parallel NGO Forums since the Earth Summit in
1992. As such, APC has been a leader in making UN information available to
NGOs world-wide.

PRESS RELEASE

Association For Progressive Communications (APC)
Women's Networking Support Program

Press Release # 2
August 28, 1995

WORLD-WIDE WOMEN'S NETWORKING DURING NGO FORUM IN HUAIROU

The global on-line women community will experience new heights in women's
networking with the establishment of the APC network in Huairou which will
enable women from all around the world to connect with participants of the
NGO Forum in China.

The computer networking services at the NGO Forum are staffed and run by
the Women's Networking Support Program of the Association for Progressive
Communications (APC). Over the last two years this Program has directly
helped hundreds of women's organisations in more than 30 countries to
incorporate the use of computer communications in their preparations for
the World Conference on Women, while thousands more have been able to
access quality information on the Conference.

The Program has focused on demonstrating how this technology can be an
effective tool for information sharing and coordination. Several hundred
women on all continents have received training in use of the system and
over 50 more have been trained as technicians and trainers. Hundreds of
women's organisations around the world have connected to computer networks
for the first time and many of their members have mastered the use of this
technology.

APC Women's Program has ensured that most of the key documents relating to
the World Conference and NGO Forum are rapidly made available on the
network, which has greatly increased the possibility of women making
informed input to the preparatory process. Many of the lobbying proposals
for the UN Platform for Action that will circulate during the NGO Forum and
World Conference have been made possible because women had rapid access to
the successive versions of the draft document and to the proposals of other
NGOs.

Information exchange fora on the World Conference and other women's issues
have been created on the networks and there has been active input and
interaction from women in many parts of the world. Much of this
information also circulates freely across the Internet.

APC is a non-profit association of computer networks that provide low cost
communications services to NGOs and individuals working for peace,
environmental sustainability, development, education, health, social
justice and gender equality. The 18 member and more than 50 partner
networks serve users in 133 countries, many of which do not yet have
Internet access. In several cases they are the only computer
communications service available to NGOs in their country.

The APC Women's Program, which is coordinated from the APC member system in
Ecuador, Ecuanex, gives special attention to supporting women from areas
that are technologically less developed, including, for example, countries
from Africa and Asia, but also remote areas of Canada.
